Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Your attorney should not speak in legalese.

Finding an attorney that is a “real person” can be difficult.  Many attorneys surround themselves almost exclusively with other attorneys and are accustomed to speaking in ivory tower legalese.  You should be able to connect with your attorney on a personal level, and he or she should speak to you in plain language that you can understand.  You will be working very closely with this person on issues that are very important to you.  It is important that he or she be down-to-Earth and someone that you connect with.

Your attorney should be accessible.

The most common complaint that clients have of their attorneys is that the attorney is unreachable, does not communicate with them regularly, or does not promptly return your calls.  Your attorney should reach out to you about your case regularly and respond within 24 hours to calls and e-mails.  An open line of communication between you and your attorney is essential to building trust.

Your attorney should be realistic with you about costs and outcomes.

Your attorney’s goal should not be to win at all costs.  Rather, it should be to achieve a favorable outcome for you as efficiently as possible.  It is important that your attorney set realistic expectations at the outset as to the costs you should expect, concerns that the attorney has about the outcome of your case, and the length of time that you should expect your case to take.

Regardless of the nature your case, we have an experienced attorney who will focus on your individual needs. Our team of attorneys works closely together, bringing each of their different fields of experience to bear in order to optimize our client care.

Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Cost-Effective

When we started our firm in the midst of the recession, we learned to survive in a lean environment and pass the savings on to our clients.  As the economy has improved, we have not changed our philosophy.  We are hungry to grow our client base, and so we have intentionally set our rates below what the market will bear.  Our mission is to make each client walk away feeling that they got more value than they paid for.  This is easier to do when we make our prices affordable.

Client-Focused

The secret to our success as a firm is incredibly simple: we build a personal relationship with each of our clients and treat them with the respect that they deserve.  We pride ourselves on our open lines of communication, frequent check-ins with our clients, and our accessibility.  We are here to help you in any way we can, often leveraging our network of resources to assist you with non-legal issues that you may be having.  We are your one-stop problem-solver and trusted adviser.  All attorneys say that they provide excellent client service, but, unlike other attorneys, we practice what we preach.  We make sure every client walks away happy . . . period.

Comprehensive

We are your community law firm.  Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients.  Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives.  No one attorney can be experienced at everything.  That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of experience.  Our attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.

Our Des Moines Family Law & Divorce Attorneys provide excellent service in the following areas of law:

We Are Proven Advocates!  We are proud of the experience, skills, and experience of our Des Moines Divorce Lawyers & Naperville Family Law Attorneys.  We consistently achieve the best possible outcome from our clients.  Just take a look at our clients' testimonials.  We have also been recognized by many industry professionals for our proficiency in Divorce law specifically.  O'Flaherty Law was ranked one of the 10 Best Attorneys for Client Satisfaction in 2016 by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys.  We received Avvo's 2016 Clients' Choice Award for Divorce.  We have an A+ Rating with the better business bureau, with zero complaints.  You can also check out this article written about Kevin O'Flaherty when he received Suburban Life Magazine's Best Under 40 Award for 2015.

We Are Cost-Effective!  If you hire the wrong attorney for your Divorce, the process can be incredibly expensive.  Our Naperville divorce attorneys work efficiently to win you the results you want in an affordable manner.  We keep a close eye on expenditures and communicate realistic expectations regarding the cost of accomplishing your goals before you hire us.  We never want you to be surprised by a legal bill.  Our goal is to have you walk away feeling great about your representation . . . that is hard to do if you have monstrous unexpected legal bills.

Our Des Moines Divorce Attorneys Work As A Team!  Our Divorce Attorneys all have extensive experience which they bring to bear as they collaborate on your case.  They also rely on the experience of other attorneys at our firm with skills in other practice areas when other areas of law come into play in your divorce, which they often do.  Firms without a team of attorneys with experience in different practice areas are operating with a blind spot when other issues arise in the divorce, such as bankruptcy, business representation, estate planning, guardianship, and litigation.  As a firm, our Des Moines attorneys are experienced in all of these practice areas, giving you an advantage. We Are Your Shoulder To Lean On!  Divorce is inevitably an emotional time involving unexpected emergencies.  Our attorneys are accessible and reachable day and night.  We are compassionate as we educate and guide you through the process.  You will not be alone, because we will be by your side as your advocate.

What to Expect From a Consultation

The purpose of a consultation is to determine whether our firm is a good fit for your legal needs. In this episode, our Des Moines attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains the adoption process in Iowa.

Iowa Adoption Process Explained

In this video, our Des Moines family attorneys explain how adoption in Iowa is governed by Iowa Code Chapter 600. Iowa law requires adopters, married or unmarried, to be over 18 years of age. Most adults are eligible to adopt if they have a current approved home study on file. A home study includes interviews with all members of a potential adopting family, a home visit, fingerprinting, record checks, criminal background checks, and child abuse registry checks.

In this article, our Des Moines attorneys will examine changes in family law in Iowa for 2021.

Iowa Recent Changes to Family Law 2021

In this video, our Des Moines Family attorneys explain how in Iowa, spousal support continues to be governed by Iowa Code Section 598.21A, which states the court may grant an order requiring support payments for a limited or indefinite length of time after considering several factors. One of the factors the court must consider under 598.21A is the tax consequences to each party. In one Iowa Supreme Court decision, the Court discussed the tax consequences of the new law, and ultimately used the changed tax considerations as one of the reasons to lower the payor’s amount of support payments. Courts will likely continue this trend of awarding lower spousal support payments under the new law. There have not been any significant recent changes to Iowa Child Support Law. The most recent changes occurred in 2018 with changes to how health care costs are calculated. Iowa continues to calculate child support and medical support payments is through child support guidelines, which are created by the Iowa Supreme Court.

In this article, our Des Moines attorney will explain Iowa family mediation and child custody mediation.

Iowa Family Mediation Explained: Divorce and Child Custody Mediation

In this video, our Des Moines family attorneys explain how Mediation allows opposing parties to meet and negotiate in a neutral setting. A trained mediator often sits in to ensure discussions are fair and productive. Mediation is private, confidential, and incredibly effective.  Mediation can be used to resolve issues surrounding a divorce such as child custody, child support, spousal maintenance, and division of assets and liabilities. In Iowa, the court can order mediation sessions before a child custody case is awarded a trial. Mediation sessions are often required to reduce the strain of trials on the court system. Mediation also encourages parents to act and negotiate in the best interest of their child, who they know best. However, mediation is sometimes not appropriate. If there is a history of domestic violence, the court will rarely require mediation. Other situations where mediation may not be required is if a party lives out of state or is incarcerated.
