Dividing property during a divorce can feel overwhelming. That’s why we built this simple Iowa Property Division Calculator—to help you get a clearer picture of what a fair division might look like.
Iowa uses an “equitable distribution” system when it comes to dividing property in a divorce. That means everything you and your spouse own, including property acquired before and during the marriage, is subject to division if the court believes it’s fair. This includes your home, retirement accounts, savings, and even debts.
“Equitable” doesn’t always mean 50/50. The court looks at things like how long you were married, each person’s financial situation, who contributed what (financially and non-financially), and whether either person gave up work or education to support the other.
Our calculator doesn’t replace legal advice, but it can help you start thinking about how assets and debts might be divided based on what each person contributed to the marriage.
Total Marital Property
This is the total value of everything you and your spouse own together. That includes your house, cars, savings, investment accounts, pensions, and valuable items like furniture or jewelry.
Total Marital Debts
These are the debts you share as a couple—things like mortgages, car loans, credit card balances, and personal loans. These amounts will be subtracted from your total assets to get the net value.
Your Contribution Estimate
Enter your best estimate of how much you contributed to the marriage. That includes income you brought in, work around the house, raising kids, or anything else that supported the family. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just an honest reflection.
Spouse’s Contribution Estimate
This is your estimate of your spouse’s contributions, which should add up to 100% when combined with yours. So if you estimate that you contributed 60%, your spouse’s share should be 40%.
Once you enter the numbers, the calculator shows your share and your spouse’s share of the net marital property.
It’s not always easy to figure out what’s “fair,” especially when emotions are high. This tool helps you take a step back and look at the numbers. Whether you're preparing for a conversation with your spouse, thinking about meeting with a lawyer, or just trying to get your thoughts in order, this can be a helpful first step.
Every case is different. Courts may also consider prenuptial agreements, inheritances, misconduct, or financial need. If you have questions about your specific situation, an experienced divorce attorney can guide you through your rights and options.

When we started our firm in the midst of the recession, we learned to survive in a lean environment and pass the savings on to our clients. As the economy has improved, we have not changed our philosophy. We are hungry to grow our client base, and so we have intentionally set our rates below what the market will bear. Our mission is to make each client walk away feeling that they got more value than they paid for. This is easier to do when we make our prices affordable.
The secret to our success as a firm is incredibly simple: we build a personal relationship with each of our clients and treat them with the respect that they deserve. We pride ourselves on our open lines of communication, frequent check-ins with our clients, and our accessibility. We are here to help you in any way we can, often leveraging our network of resources to assist you with non-legal issues that you may be having. We are your one-stop problem-solver and trusted adviser. All attorneys say that they provide excellent client service, but, unlike other attorneys, we practice what we preach. We make sure every client walks away happy . . . period.
We are your community law firm. Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients. Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives. No one attorney can be experienced at everything. That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of experience. Our attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.
Since our business comes entirely from referrals and community involvement, our reputation for quality legal work is our greatest asset . . . and it is extremely important to us. Each of our attorneys is truly experienced in his or her practice areas, with the highest personal standards of excellence. We are proud of our reputation in the community, and we did not achieve it by accident. Our reputation for excellence comes from hard work, continuing education, and an above-and-beyond approach to our clients’ cases.
