He then worked for the City of Chicago, supervising a team of ten investigators, who responded to claims of physical abuse and racial bias by members of the Chicago Police Department, as well as responding to and investigating police-involved shootings. He has been a criminal defense and family law attorney for the last two years.

Matt Hector

Matthew Hector has been practicing law for the last 16 years. For the last 11 years, he has primarily focused on foreclosure defense, consumer defense, and bankruptcy law. Mr. Hector has an extensive background in civil litigation and is an accomplished appellate attorney in both federal and state courts.

In fact, Mr. Hector made new law under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. In Pantoja v. Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC., (Case No.15-1567, U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit), Mr. Hector successfully defended a ruling from the district court. The ruling expanded consumer protections when debt collectors try to collect old debts. Portfolio Recovery Associates petitioned the Supreme Court of the United States for a writ of certiorari. The Court denied PRA’s petition after considering briefs from both sides. On March 3, 2020, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau published a proposed rule in the Federal Register. That rule would make the case law that Mr. Hector made part of the federal regulatory scheme.

Mr. Hector graduated from the University of Alabama in 1998 with an honors degree in English and German. He received his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School, cum laude, in 2004. He received his L.L.M. in Information Technology & Privacy, with honors, from The John Marshall Law School in 2007. While a student at John Marshall, Mr. Hector was an editor for the John Marshall Law Review. His article was published in 2003. Privacy to Be Patched in Later - an Examination of the Decline of Privacy Rights, 36 J. Marshall L. Rev. 985 (2003)

Mr. Hector has continued to publish since he completed his studies. In addition to other law journal articles, he has drafted a chapter on contract law in the entertainment and video game industry for a textbook, published articles about the law and video games, and wrote the Illinois Bar Journal’s LawPulse column for 4 ½ years. He also authored a book on consumer defense law entitled “Consumer Defense: A Tactical Guide to Foreclosure, Bankruptcy, & Creditor Harassment.”

Our Areas of Expertise

Why O'Flaherty Law?

Our Bettendorf Attorneys are great at what we do! Our excellent Bettendorf attorneys put client service first, and it shows.  We have been named one of 2016's 10 Best Attorneys for Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys.  We have received Avvo's 2016 Clients' Choice Award for both Divorce and Estate Planning.  We have an A+ Rating with the better business bureau, with zero complaints.  Kevin O'Flaherty was the recipient of Suburban Life Magazine's Best Under 40 Award for 2015.  Most importantly, many of our past clients have taken the time to leave us glowing heartfelt testimonials.  We understand that every client that chooses to trust us with their legal work is putting faith in us to go above-and-beyond to accomplish their goals, and we take that honor seriously.

We Provide Comprehensive Representation!  We are your community law firm.  Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients.  Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives.  No one attorney can be an expert at everything.  That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of expertise.  Our Bettendorf attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.

We Are Accessible and Put our Clients First!  Have an emergency or questions about your case on the weekend or after hours?  No problem. Unlike many attorneys, we promptly respond to phone calls and e-mails, and make it a priority to get back to our clients immediately.  More importantly, we affirmatively communicate with you about every aspect of your case and work to educate you about the legal process.  Our Bettendorf attorneys are here to serve you.

We Are Efficient and Affordable!  We know that the last thing most people can afford is expensive legal fees.  Our Bettendorf attorneys would rather develop long-term relationships with our clients and have them rave about us and the value they received to their friends and family than charge what the market will bear.  We have intentionally made our fees affordable, not because we have to, but because we can and we want to help as many people as possible in order to build a reputation for efficiency, effectiveness and value.

Before I founded O’Flaherty Law in 2011, I had previously worked for five years at a small general practice firm, where I learned to practice nearly every area of law.  When I started my own practice, I based the practice on principles I had learned from my parents, who had owned and operated a very successful dental practice in Downers Grove for 30 years.  For as long as I could remember, my parents’ practice had the same team.  My parents also had loyal patients who would stay with them even after moving hours away from their practice.

There were several lessons about being in a service business that I learned from growing up watching my parents’ dental practice:

(1) Treat your staff well, and they will treat your clients well—this is essential to creating an organization that provides amazing service consistently on every level;

(2) Make sure that every client understands that they are important to you on a personal level—every client walks away happy . . . no exceptions; and

(3) You can never rest on your laurels—don’t ever settle for anything less than being the absolute best at what you do and providing the highest quality of work to your clients.

In June, 2012 we moved to the corner of Main Street and the train tracks in downtown Downers Grove.  For someone who had grown up in town, this was a dream come true.   Now, nearly five years after embarking on this journey, we have a strong team of attorneys and support staff practicing nearly every area of law, and an enormous network of happy clients who have spread the word about our services.

At O'Flaherty Law of Bettendorf, our mission and standard is to exceed expectations in every aspect of our practice, by providing personalized, efficient, quality legal services.

By operating according to our mission, we hope to achieve the vision of enriching and elevating the lives of our clients through excellent problem solving and exceptional service.  If we have achieved our goal of "wowing" you with our above-and-beyond service, the best compliment we can receive is the opportunity to serve your friends and family.  We are your community law firm.

I am excited to be helping more people every year, and to continue to spread the values that I learned from my parents’ dental practice: “treat your employees and clients well, be good at what you do, and you will be happy in your work.”
