This question came from one of our users:

Can an IOWA trust be a unique name, like ABC Trust, and have nothing to do with the person's name?

Yes, an Iowa trust can have a unique name like “ABC Trust” and does not need to include the grantor’s (creator’s) name.
There is no legal requirement in Iowa that the name of a trust must include the name of the grantor or beneficiary. The trust's name can be anything the grantor chooses, including a generic or creative name, as long as it does not cause confusion or infringe on any trademarks.

However, keep the following in mind:

  • The name must be sufficiently specific to identify the trust in legal and financial documents.
  • Third parties (like banks or title companies) may request additional information (e.g., a certificate of trust) to verify the trust’s legitimacy and terms, regardless of its name.
  • For practical purposes, many people include the grantor’s name and a date (e.g., “John Smith Living Trust dated January 1, 2025”) to clearly identify the trust.

In summary, Iowa law allows flexibility when naming a trust. You can absolutely name it something unique like "ABC Trust" without referencing the grantor, as long as it meets identification needs and doesn't cause confusion.
