Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Your attorney should not speak in legalese.

Finding an attorney who doesn't use complex legal jargon and is a “real person” can be difficult. You should be able to connect with your attorney on a personal level, and they should speak to you in plain language that you can understand.

Your attorney should be accessible.

You deserve a responsive legal team that communicates regularly and promptly returns your calls.  Although legal matters can take time, you should feel confident in the progress of your case.

Your attorney should be realistic about costs and outcomes.

You want a favorable outcome as efficiently as possible. Your attorney should set realistic expectations on costs, concerns about the outcome of your case, and the length of time that you can expect your case to take.

Cost-Effective

When we started our firm in the midst of the recession, we learned to survive in a lean environment and pass the savings on to our clients.  As the economy has improved, we have not changed our philosophy.  We are hungry to grow our client base, and so we have intentionally set our rates below what the market will bear.  Our mission is to make each client walk away feeling that they got more value than they paid for.  This is easier to do when we make our prices affordable.

Client-Focused

The secret to our success as a firm is incredibly simple: we build a personal relationship with each of our clients and treat them with the respect that they deserve.  We pride ourselves on our open lines of communication, frequent check-ins with our clients, and our accessibility.  We are here to help you in any way we can, often leveraging our network of resources to assist you with non-legal issues that you may be having.  We are your one-stop problem-solver and trusted adviser.  All attorneys say that they provide excellent client service, but, unlike other attorneys, we practice what we preach.  We make sure every client walks away happy . . . period.

Comprehensive

We are your community law firm.  Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients.  Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives.  No one attorney can be experienced at everything.  That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of experience.  Our attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.

In this video, Joliet divorce lawyer Kevin O'Flaherty explains when court attendance is required for Illinois divorces.

The Illinois Probate Process Explained

In this article, our Joliet attorneys explain when you have to attend court in order to get a divorce in Illinois. In an uncontested divorce, only one spouse is required to appear, and the case is usually concluded with a single court appearance. In a contested divorce, the number of court appearances depends on the number of issues such as asset and liability division, spousal maintenance, child support and parenting time and responsibility that the parties are unable to resolve through settlement. Do not hesitate to contact O'Flaherty Law for all your legal needs.

In this video, Joliet estate planning attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains how revocable living trusts are used in estate planning.

Estate Planning: Revocable Living Trusts Explained

In this article, our Joliet lawyers explain the Illinois probate process. Probate is a court case that is sometimes necessary in order to distribute a deceased person's assets to his or her heirs. Probate is generally required in Illinois if the deceased individual owned any real estate or more than $100,000.00 in assets outside of payable-on-death accounts. If probate is necessary, the person responsible for administering the estate, known as the executor or administrator, must petition the court for the power to gather the assets of the estate and distribute the assets to the deceased person's creditors and heirs. Heirs and creditors must receive certain notices and reports from the executor and administrator in order for the estate to close.

In this video, Joliet estate planning attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains how revocable living trusts are used in estate planning.

Estate Planning: Revocable Living Trusts Explained

In this article, our Joliet attorneys explain why revocable living trusts are the most popular estate planning technique. Revocable living trusts create the legal fiction that some of your assets are owned by your trust, rather than you individually.  Although you retain complete control of your assets during your lifetime, when you pass your estate will not be required to go through a lengthy and sometimes costly probate case.  Instead, your wishes can immediately be enacted and your assets distributed to your loved ones according to the terms of your trust.
