If you have filed an immigration application, visa, or petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), there are two ways to check the progress of your case's status: online or by phone.
By phone: If you are calling from within the United States, you can contact the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 or TTY at 1-800-767-1833. If you are calling from outside the United States, you can call 212-620-3418 or contact your local USCIS international field office.
Online: You can also check your application status online using the U.S. Department of State's Visa Status Check portal. To search for your case status online, select the type of visa you applied for (i.e., immigrant or nonimmigrant) and enter your case number.
In order to track your immigration case status online, you will need your USCIS receipt number. This is a unique 13-character identifier that can be found in the left-hand corner on your I-797 Notice of Action. You can then use the USCIS Case Status Online tool on the USCIS website. You can also create an account on myUSCIS to log in to view your case status and other related information.
Quick How-to Steps to Check Your USCIS Case Status Online:
- Locate your USCIS receipt number: This number is on the left-hand corner of the I-797 Notice of Action you should have received from USCIS.
- Go to the USCIS Case Status Online tool: You can find this tool on the USCIS website: https://egov.uscis.gov/.
- Enter your receipt number: Enter the receipt number into the textbox. Omit any dashes (-). Do include any other characters, such as asterisks (*) or pound sign (#), if they are part of your receipt number.
- Check the status: Click the "Check Status" button below the textbox where you entered your receipt number to view the progress of your case.
- Alternatively, create a myUSCIS account: You can also check the status of your case by creating an account at https://myaccount.uscis.gov/create-account, logging in to access information about your case, and receiving future notifications.

Once you log in with your information, the online system will show you the last action taken on your case. It will also tell you information about the next steps in your case, if applicable.
Checking Processing times:
Even if you have not filed an application with USCIS, you may still be able to check how long processing times may take by using USCIS's case processing time tool.
This is very useful when determining the type of visa that you wish to apply for and the length of time you can expect to wait for an application or determination to be processed. When you use the tool, there are three dropdown menus that provide information that you will need to select:
1. The form (Application, Petition, or Visa) and
2. The form category you have filed or intend to file, and
3. The USCIS office that is handling your case.
