Top 3 Qualities to look for in Your Attorney

We believe your attorney should not speak in legalese

Finding an attorney who is a “real person” can be difficult. Many attorneys surround themselves almost exclusively with other attorneys and are accustomed to speaking in ivory tower legalese.  You should be able to connect with your attorney on a personal level, and he or she should speak to you in plain language that you can understand.  You will be working very closely with this person on issues that are very important to you. It is important that he or she be down-to-earth and someone that you connect with.

We believe your attorney should be accessible

The most common complaint that clients have of their attorneys is that the attorney is unreachable, does not communicate with them regularly, or does not promptly return your calls.  Your attorney should reach out to you about your case regularly and respond within 24 hours to calls and e-mails.  An open line of communication between you and your attorney is essential to building trust.

We believe your attorney should be realistic with you about costs and outcomes

Your attorney’s goal should not be to win at all costs.  Rather, it should be to achieve a favorable outcome for you as efficiently as possible.  It is important that your attorney set realistic expectations at the outset as to the costs you should expect, the concerns that the attorney has about the outcome of your case, and the length of time that you should expect your case to take.

Regardless of the nature of your case, we have an experienced attorney who will focus on your individual needs. Our team of attorneys works closely together, bringing each of their different fields of experience to bear in order to optimize our client care.

Kevin's firm handled setting up my will and trust recently. They took something that seemed intimidating and made it easy to understand. I've also referred a couple clients to Kevin - he's trustworthy, approachable and very fairly priced.

About Champaign County Family Law Attorneys:

We Are Great at What We Do!  Kevin O'Flaherty was honored to be named one of Suburban Life Magazine's Best Under 40.  As a firm, O'Flaherty Law was named one of the 10 Best Attorneys for Client Satisfaction for 2016 by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys.  Because we have received so much positive client feedback, we were also the recipient of the Avvo Clients' Choice Award for 2016 in the practice areas of both Rockford Divorce and Estate Planning.  We have an A+ rating with the better Business Bureau, and are proud to have never received a complaint.  Most importantly, many of our previous clients have thought highly enough of our above-and-beyond service to take time out of their busy schedules to leave us positive testimonials.  Our Rockford attorneys are the best at what they do, and we are proud of the good work that we perform as a firm for each of our clients.

We Are Affordable!  We are proud of our affordable rates, which allow us to build long-term relationships with as many members of the community as possible.  For many legal matters, we offer budget-friendly flat fees.  If a flat fee is not feasible, our attorneys will work efficiently with an eye toward your budget.  From the outset of your case, we will set reasonable expectations for costs and outcomes, and continue to communicate with you at every stage of your matter, so that you will never be surprised by a legal bill.  We would rather charge less and have you rave to your friends and family about the amazing value that you received from our firm. We Are Client-Focused!  Legal skill and experience should be a prerequisite for any attorney you are considering hiring.  What sets us apart is our above-and-beyond approach to client service.  We won't speak to you in legal ease; you will feel comfortable with our down-to-earth Rockford attorneys.

We are accessible, available 24/7.  We promptly return all calls and e-mails and will affirmatively communicate with you and educate you at each stage of your case.  Finally, we are your trusted adviser.  We always act with the utmost integrity, and are always honest and realistic with our clients about the likelihood of and the steps necessary to accomplish their legal goals.

We Are Comprehensive!  Unlike sole practitioners who are spread too thin, our team of skilled Rockford lawyers and staff is large enough to provide comprehensive service in nearly every practice area and provide our clients with the resources they need to achieve your goals.  However, we are not like expensive downtown firms that are too large to focus on client service.  We have found a sweet spot, allowing us to provide affordable, above-and-beyond customer service, while being a one-stop shop for our community's legal needs.  Once we earn your trust, you will never have to look for another attorney again, regardless of your legal matter.

New Illinois Laws Impact Child Support Obligations

Our Champaign County family law attorneys explain the differences in how child support is determined in 2020. Once an appropriate amount for child support is set by the court, each parent’s portion of the obligation must be designated. Typically, this is determined by the parents’ relative incomes. The larger the difference in income between the obligor and oblige, the more the obligor is likely to pay in child support. The change from a fixed-rate model to an income shares model affects each case differently. Spouses with similar incomes will likely receive less in child support under the new law.

Child Custody Mediation In Illinois

In this article, our Champaign County family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains the process of mediation. Mediation is a way for parties to come to an agreement on child-related issues with the help of a neutral third party mediator. This can help parties define the issues, facilitate communication between parties,  and help the parties reach mutually acceptable solutions. Mediation can be undertaken voluntarily or under a court order. It is important to have a lawyer present, especially when there is an imbalance of power between the mediating parties. If you are successful in reaching an agreement, your attorney will file the results with the court in order to reach a final order in the case without the necessity for litigation.

Don’t Make These Common Mistakes When Going Through An Illinois Divorce

When going through a divorce, couples tend to focus on big things, like who gets the house, spousal or child support, parenting time, and visitation rights, and many don’t have much bandwidth left to deal with the little things. But, what may seem like trivial items, such as passwords, cell phone plans, and tax implications can cause serious headaches when issues inevitably crop up in the future. Furthermore, couples in a rush to divorce, or hoping to game the system, face much more serious consequences for actions and decisions that could have easily been avoided.
