Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Your attorney should not speak in legalese.

Finding an attorney that is a “real person” can be difficult.  Many attorneys surround themselves almost exclusively with other attorneys and are accustomed to speaking in ivory tower legalese.  You should be able to connect with your attorney on a personal level, and he or she should speak to you in plain language that you can understand.  You will be working very closely with this person on issues that are very important to you.  It is important that he or she be down-to-Earth and someone that you connect with.

Your attorney should be accessible.

The most common complaint that clients have of their attorneys is that the attorney is unreachable, does not communicate with them regularly, or does not promptly return your calls.  Your attorney should reach out to you about your case regularly and respond within 24 hours to calls and e-mails.  An open line of communication between you and your attorney is essential to building trust.

Your attorney should be realistic with you about costs and outcomes.

Your attorney’s goal should not be to win at all costs.  Rather, it should be to achieve a favorable outcome for you as efficiently as possible.  It is important that your attorney set realistic expectations at the outset as to the costs you should expect, concerns that the attorney has about the outcome of your case, and the length of time that you should expect your case to take.

Regardless of the nature your case, we have an experienced attorney who will focus on your individual needs. Our team of attorneys works closely together, bringing each of their different fields of expertise to bear in order to optimize our client care.

Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Cost-Effective

When we started our firm in the midst of the recession, we learned to survive in a lean environment and pass the savings on to our clients.  As the economy has improved, we have not changed our philosophy.  We are hungry to grow our client base, and so we have intentionally set our rates below what the market will bear.  Our mission is to make each client walk away feeling that they got more value than they paid for.  This is easier to do when we make our prices affordable.

Client-Focused

The secret to our success as a firm is incredibly simple: we build a personal relationship with each of our clients and treat them with the respect that they deserve.  We pride ourselves on our open lines of communication, frequent check-ins with our clients, and our accessibility.  We are here to help you in any way we can, often leveraging our network of resources to assist you with non-legal issues that you may be having.  We are your one-stop problem-solver and trusted adviser.  All attorneys say that they provide excellent client service, but, unlike other attorneys, we practice what we preach.  We make sure every client walks away happy . . . period.

Comprehensive

We are your community law firm.  Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients.  Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives.  No one attorney can be an expert at everything.  That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of expertise.  Our attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.

Our Champaign County Family Law Attorneys provide excellent service in the following areas of law:

Our attorneys work as a team to provide comprehensive has experience in:

We Are Great at What We Do!  Kevin O'Flaherty was honored to be named one of Suburban Life Magazine's Best Under 40.  As a firm, O'Flaherty Law was named one of the 10 Best Attorneys for Client Satisfaction for 2016 by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys.  Because we have received so much positive client feedback, we were also the recipient of the Avvo Clients' Choice Award for 2016 in the practice areas of both Rockford Divorce and Estate Planning.  We have an A+ rating with the better Business Bureau, and are proud to have never received a complaint.  Most importantly, many of our previous clients have thought highly enough of our above-and-beyond service to take time out of their busy schedules to leave us positive testimonials.  Our Rockford attorneys are the best at what they do, and we are proud of the good work that we perform as a firm for each of our clients.

We Are Affordable!  We are proud of our affordable rates, which allow us to build long-term relationships with as many members of the community as possible.  For many legal matters, we offer budget-friendly flat fees.  If a flat fee is not feasible, our attorneys will work efficiently with an eye toward your budget.  From the outset of your case, we will set reasonable expectations for costs and outcomes, and continue to communicate with you at every stage of your matter, so that you will never be surprised by a legal bill.  We would rather charge less and have you rave to your friends and family about the amazing value that you received from our firm. We Are Client-Focused!  Legal skill and expertise should be a prerequisite for any attorney you are considering hiring.  What sets us apart is our above-and-beyond approach to client service.  We won't speak to you in legal ease; you will feel comfortable with our down-to-earth Rockford attorneys.

We are accessible, available 24/7.  We promptly return all calls and e-mails and will affirmatively communicate with you and educate you at each stage of your case.  Finally, we are your trusted adviser.  We always act with the utmost integrity, and are always honest and realistic with our clients about the likelihood of and the steps necessary to accomplish their legal goals.

We Are Comprehensive!  Unlike sole practitioners who are spread too thin, our team of skilled Rockford lawyers and staff is large enough to provide comprehensive service in nearly every practice area and provide our clients with the resources they need to achieve your goals.  However, we are not like expensive downtown firms that are too large to focus on client service.  We have found a sweet spot, allowing us to provide affordable, above-and-beyond customer service, while being a one-stop shop for our community's legal needs.  Once we earn your trust, you will never have to look for another attorney again, regardless of your legal matter.

Champaign County family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty discusses the new changes to Illinois Child Support Laws.

Champaign County family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty discusses the new changes to Illinois Child Support Laws.

New Illinois Laws Impact Child Support Obligations

Our Champaign County family law attorneys explain the differences in how child support is determined in 2020. Once an appropriate amount for child support is set by the court, each parent’s portion of the obligation must be designated. Typically, this is determined by the parents’ relative incomes. The larger the difference in income between the obligor and oblige, the more the obligor is likely to pay in child support. The change from a fixed-rate model to an income shares model affects each case differently. Spouses with similar incomes will likely receive less in child support under the new law.

Champaign County family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains family mediation and how it can be voluntary and involuntary in the state of Illinois.

Child Custody Mediation In Illinois

In this article, our Champaign County family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains the process of mediation. Mediation is a way for parties to come to an agreement on child-related issues with the help of a neutral third party mediator. This can help parties define the issues, facilitate communication between parties,  and help the parties reach mutually acceptable solutions. Mediation can be undertaken voluntarily or under a court order. It is important to have a lawyer present, especially when there is an imbalance of power between the mediating parties. If you are successful in reaching an agreement, your attorney will file the results with the court in order to reach a final order in the case without the necessity for litigation.

Family law attorney Kevin O'Flaherty explains collaborative divorce and cooperative divorce as alternative dispute resolution techniques in marital dissolution cases, and compares the pros and cons of each.

Cooperative Divorce Explained

In this video, our collaborative and cooperative divorce attorneys explain the alternative dispute resolutions in marital dissolution cases. A cooperative divorce is like a collaborative divorce in that the parties agree to negotiate out of court and in good faith.  The open exchange of information is necessary because in a collaborative divorce, attorneys usually don't conduct depositions or written discovery. The difference between a Cooperative Divorce and Collaborative Law Divorce is that attorneys don't have to remove themselves should litigation become necessary.  If negotiations fail, the parties can transition into court proceedings smoothly and cost-effectively
