This question came from one of our users:

How Do You Pay a Speeding Ticket in Illinois If You Don’t Have a Driver’s License?

In Illinois, if you are caught driving without a valid driver’s license, expect to face penalties. Under Illinois law, driving without a valid driver’s license can land you a maximum penalty of up to 6 months in jail and a $1,500 fine (625 ILCS 5/6-101). Other penalties that could be imposed include court supervision and community service hours.

In addition to facing criminal penalties for driving without a valid driver’s license, you could also have your license suspended or revoked by the Illinois Secretary of State should you apply for an Illinois driver’s license in the future.

Paying a Speeding Ticket in Illinois Without a Driver’s License

In Illinois, some traffic violations will require a court appearance, while other violations can simply be resolved by paying a fine. If a court appearance is required, your ticket will state “court appearance required” somewhere on the ticket. If a court appearance is not required, your ticket will state “no court appearance required” somewhere on the ticket.

It is important to note that by paying the fine for the violation, you are admitting guilt. As a result, a conviction will be entered on your driving record for the violation. Convictions on your driving record can lead to your license being suspended or revoked, as well as increases in your auto insurance premiums.

If you were charged with both: (1) driving a vehicle without a valid license and (2) speeding, you will likely have a mandatory court appearance for the driving a vehicle without a valid license violation. However, you may be able to pay the fine for the speeding ticket online without having to appear in court.

If you do not have to appear in court for the speeding violation, you should be able to look up your ticket online by using the ticket/citation number through the county portal where your ticket was issued. If your ticket was locatable through the county portal using your ticket/citation number, you should be able to pay online without needing to provide a driver’s license number.
