Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Your attorney should not speak in legalese.

Finding an attorney that is a “real person” can be difficult.  Many attorneys surround themselves almost exclusively with other attorneys and are accustomed to speaking in ivory tower legalese.  You should be able to connect with your attorney on a personal level, and he or she should speak to you in plain language that you can understand.  You will be working very closely with this person on issues that are very important to you.  It is important that he or she be down-to-Earth and someone that you connect with.

Your attorney should be accessible.

The most common complaint that clients have of their attorneys is that the attorney is unreachable, does not communicate with them regularly, or does not promptly return your calls.  Your attorney should reach out to you about your case regularly and respond within 24 hours to calls and e-mails.  An open line of communication between you and your attorney is essential to building trust.

Your attorney should be realistic with you about costs and outcomes.

Your attorney’s goal should not be to win at all costs.  Rather, it should be to achieve a favorable outcome for you as efficiently as possible.  It is important that your attorney set realistic expectations at the outset as to the costs you should expect, concerns that the attorney has about the outcome of your case, and the length of time that you should expect your case to take.

Regardless of the nature your case, we have an experienced attorney who will focus on your individual needs. Our team of attorneys works closely together, bringing each of their different fields of expertise to bear in order to optimize our client care.

Top 3 Qualities to Look for in Your Attorney

Cost-Effective

When we started our firm in the midst of the recession, we learned to survive in a lean environment and pass the savings on to our clients.  As the economy has improved, we have not changed our philosophy.  We are hungry to grow our client base, and so we have intentionally set our rates below what the market will bear.  Our mission is to make each client walk away feeling that they got more value than they paid for.  This is easier to do when we make our prices affordable.

Client-Focused

The secret to our success as a firm is incredibly simple: we build a personal relationship with each of our clients and treat them with the respect that they deserve.  We pride ourselves on our open lines of communication, frequent check-ins with our clients, and our accessibility.  We are here to help you in any way we can, often leveraging our network of resources to assist you with non-legal issues that you may be having.  We are your one-stop problem-solver and trusted adviser.  All attorneys say that they provide excellent client service, but, unlike other attorneys, we practice what we preach.  We make sure every client walks away happy . . . period.

Comprehensive

We are your community law firm.  Our business is built on long-term relationships with our clients.  Our clients have the luxury of building trust over time with one team of attorneys, rather than having to find a new attorney for each different type of matter that arises over the course of their lives.  No one attorney can be an expert at everything.  That is why we have worked hard to assemble a team of attorneys with extensive experience in different areas of expertise.  Our attorneys work together closely to bring our collective experience to bear on any issue that may arise for our clients.

In this video, our Des Moines attorney covers how to appeal a judge's decision, what to do if you think the immigration judge made a mistake, and at what point is your immigration case is fully closed.

Is an Immigration Judge's Decision Final?

In this episode, our Des Moines attorneys explain when an immigration judge's decision is final and how you can respond. While each immigration case is unique, all U.S. immigration courts follow the same process. Deportation proceedings, also known as removal proceedings, have two stages: the first hearing, called the "master calendar hearing," and the follow-up, called the "merit hearing" or "individual hearing." The master calendar hearing functions as a preliminary hearing during which the judge discusses how your case will proceed. The merit hearing is where the judge will hear your defense and discuss any evidence.

After the merits hearing, the immigration judge will decide on the case. Some cases may take more than one day to complete, so don't assume you'll have an answer on the same day your merit hearing starts. The judge will issue the decision in writing or deliver it orally to those present in the court. Either way, you should receive a written summary of the decision. If you do not receive a written summary of the decision, it is crucial that you reach out to the court as soon as possible. Without the summary document, you will be unable to file an appeal properly.

In this episode, our Des Moines attorneys discuss how to prepare for a meeting with an immigration attorney and some of the situations you could encounter that requires a need for an immigration attorney.

Do I Need an Immigration Attorney?

In this video, our Des Moines immigration attorneys explain how a good immigration attorney will save you time, worry and possibly a lot of money. Below is a list of scenarios when an immigration attorney is highly suggested.

  • Based on your current geographical location or for any other reason you are unsure about your eligibility for a green card or another immigration benefit;
  • You’ve been deported and wish to return or face possible deportation;
  • You are interested in applying for an investment-based visa;
  • You are moving to the US to work with a US-based employer, but the employer is not assisting you with relocation or legal needs;
  • You’re immigration application or another immigration form has been denied and you’re unsure as to why;
  • You’re uncertain about the number of documents and which ones apply to you’re situation, or you feel that the entire process is too confusing;
  • You’ve been convicted of a crime or have committed a crime and are trying to enter the US or avoid removal from the US;
  • You received a notification that deportation or removal proceedings will be brought against you;
  • You are trying to obtain a USCIS green card, citizen, or other immigration benefit and you are running into issues, or have been asked to provide more information
  • You’re immigration process suddenly runs into an issue and time is of the essence or you’re on a deadline
  • You’re seeking asylum or a waiver, which requires the immigration authorities to make an exception to your situation and offer benefits that it might not normally

You’re filling out forms such as Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9), Affidavit of Support (I-134), Immigration Petition for Alien Worker (I-140), Application to Register Permanent Status or Adjust Status (I-485), Immigration Form I-130, or any number of other immigration-related forms and you run into issues or foresee a problem with one of the questions on the form.

In this article, our Des Moines attorney will discuss immigrant and Non-Immigrant visa petitions.

Immigration and Non Immigrant Visa Petitions

In this video, our Des Moines immigration attorneys explain how before entering the United States, foreign nationals usually have to obtain a visa. Visas can be broken down into two primary categories: immigrant and non-immigrant. For aliens seeking permanent residence in the United States, an immigrant visa is necessary. For those planning to spend time in the United States but not stay permanently, a non-immigrant visa will suffice. There are many different options for immigrant and non-immigrant visas, and knowing which is the correct one for your situation will make the application process that much easier. A foreign national that intends to live and work permanently in the United States must first secure an immigrant visa. Non-immigrant visas are for foreign nationals who plan to spend a certain amount of time in the United States but are not seeking permanent residence.
