How Child Support is Calculated in Illinois

Illinois generally uses the Income Shares Model to determine child support. The approach takes into account both parents' net income, the number of children to be covered by the order, and the physical care arrangements for the children. The court may also decide on expenses such as health insurance, childcare associated with employment, education, and extracurricular activities. Finances differ from family to family, so careful documentation is essential to establish a fair amount of support.

Responding to Changes in Income and Time Spent Parenting

If a parent loses a job, gets a big raise, becomes self-employed or something else happens that greatly changes the parent’s finances, a child support order may need to be reviewed. The calculation can also be affected by parent time. Illinois uses a shared-care formula if both parents have a minimum of 146 overnights per year with the child. An existing order does not automatically change. Therefore a parent usually has to petition the court or Illinois Child Support Services to modify the order.
